What are temporary veneers?
Since there is an approximately two week period to fabricate the ceramic veneers, temporary veneers are fabricated and fitted. The temporaries will give you a preview of the expected outcome and also help us identify adjustments that may be needed during the fabrication of the permanent tooth porcelain veneers.

Do veneers damage your teeth?
Veneers do not damage your teeth if the teeth are not cut down extensively as for crowns. If the teeth are already in a good position to receive veneers then they may not need any filing down or cutting. In these ideal cases, veneers can simply be placed over the top of the teeth. In some cases veneers can even be protective if the tooth underneath is worn or damaged. In the past, adhesives were not as strong as they are today and teeth were cut down to a peg and a cap/crown was made over the top. Now, adhesives are so strong that veneers can be made to cover just the front surface of the tooth. Veneers can now be made as thin as 0.3-0.5 mm. In some cases the tooth does not need any filing or reduction as there is sufficient space for the veneer to cover it.

Can you eat and brush normally with veneers?
You can eat normally with veneers. It is advised to avoid biting into hard foods especially any biting motion that may act as a lever. We would suggest to avoid biting into items such as apples, chocolate bars and crusty rolls for example. Veneers do not break or fall off if you are careful with them and if they have been put on by an experienced dentist.

Will veneers stain and can I whiten them?
Porcelain/ceramic veneers do not stain as they have a shiny smooth surface. Composite veneers on the other hand are more prone to staining. Veneers can not be whitened. It is therefore necessary to make sure you choose a colour that you will be happy with long term.

What type of veneer is best?
There are two main types of veneer; eMax and empress. The dentist will be the best person to advise you on which would be better for you. EMax veneers are stronger and will be less likely to chip or break. Empress veneers may be more natural looking but will not be as strong as Emax.

What is the procedure for veneers?
For veneers you would normally need 3 appointments. The first appointment is the consultation to discuss what you want and impressions to create a model of the desired end result. The second appointment is to make any necessary preparations to the teeth and take impressions of the teeth for construction of the final veneers. At this appointment temporary veneers of the end result will also be made. At the third appointment the veneers will be bonded to your teeth and you will have your beautiful smile.
